‘Be energy champions’ – Prime Minister of Guyana encourages Kilo Walk participants

Prime Minister of Guyana, the Hon. Mark Phillips, Brigadier Ret’d), joined scores of persons who turned out on Saturday morning for the CARICOM Energy Month (CEM) 5 Kilo Walk. The Kilo Walk is aimed at increasing awareness of sustainable energy among the general citizenry and civil society and promoting healthy lifestyles

The CARICOM Secretariat and the Guyana Energy Agency and with support from the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) and the Caribbean Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (CCREEE), organised the Walk which began at the Secretariat Headquarters in Georgetown, Guyana.

CARICOM Deputy Secretary-General, Dr. Armstrong Alexis, CARICOM Assistant Secretary-General, Economic Integration, Innovation and Development, Mr. Joseph Cox, CARICOM Programme Manager for Energy, Ms. Sandra Britton and other members of staff of the CARICOM Secretariat, representatives of the diplomatic corps, Head of the Guyana Energy Agency, Dr. Mahender Sharma, and Head of Technical Programmes of The CCREEE, Dr. Devon Gardner, were among the walkers.

Prime Minister Phillips addressed participants after the Walk and said Guyana will continue to play its role in fostering greater use of renewable energy. He said the country is using solar and hydro power to bridge the energy divide, and highlighted some of the projects Guyana is undertaking in the energy sector.

He called on participants to be “energy champions in our households, schools, workplaces and communities” and to “set the pace” for others to adopt healthier lifestyles towards a sustainable climate-resistant future for our Caribbean region

Dr. Alexis also encouraged participants to fulfill their responsibility to save the planet.

“This month’s activities are all designed with people and planet in mind and I want to continue to encourage every single one of us to take action in our own little way, because little by little, we can all make a difference,” the Deputy Secretary-General said.

Dr. Gardner said the CCREEE was pleased to support CEM as the agency seeks to draw the attention of the populace of the Region and the world at large to the need to move towards decarbonisation which will lead to resilience within economic systems by using renewable energy and by more efficient use of energy. He said he hoped the event will provide an opportunity for participants to socialise and learn more about what each person can do to meet our energy needs.

CEM is being observed during November under the theme ‘Accelerating Innovation, Driving Electrification’.
