Grenada to celebrate CARICOM’s 50th anniversary with 4 July holiday

Grenada Prime Minister, the Hon. Dickon Mitchell, has announced that Grenada will celebrate CARICOM’s 50th anniversary with a national holiday on 4 July 2023.

Prime Minister Mitchell announced the holiday in an interview on Monday to mark his government’s first year in office.

CARICOM came into existence with the signing of the Treaty of Chaguaramas on 4 July 1973. The Founding Fathers who signed the Treaty on that date were: Prime Ministers Errol Barrow of Barbados, Forbes Burnham of Guyana, Michael Manley of Jamaica, and Eric Williams of Trinidad and Tobago.

The Community will celebrate its golden jubilee under the theme `50 Years Strong: A Solid Foundation to Build on’. The hub of activities on 4 July will be in the Community’s birthplace, Trinidad and Tobago, where the 45th Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government will be held. Other activities include digital exhibitions, cultural performances, and 5K and 10K road races.
