Caribbean Foreign Ministers Meeting UK Foreign Secretary Today in Jamaica

(CARICOM Secretariat, Georgetown, Guyana) – Foreign Ministers from CARICOM Member States, the Dominican Republic, and Cuba are meeting with the United Kingdom (UK) Foreign Secretary, Rt. Hon James Cleverly in the Eleventh UK-Caribbean Forum today, Thursday 19 May in Kingston, Jamaica.

The meeting comes on the heels of the 26th Meeting of the Council for Foreign and Community Relations (COFCOR) which concluded in Jamaica on 17 May.

Chair of COFCOR, Jamaica’s Foreign Minister, Senator the Hon. Kamina Johnson Smith, is co-chair with the UK Foreign Secretary. CARICOM Secretary-General, Dr. Carla Barnett is participating in the Forum.

In a recent media briefing, Senator Johnson Smith said the Forum provides an opportunity to take stock of the progress of implementation of the Tenth UK-Caribbean Forum Action Plan.

The agenda is replete with other areas for deeper cooperation between the UK and the Caribbean including Trade in Goods and Services; Financing for Development; Climate Change and Environment; Immigration and Windrush; Food Security; Health; Education; the Situation in Haiti, and Security Cooperation.

Caribbean Foreign Ministers will also engage their UK counterpart on a formal mechanism for consultation and cooperation.

This Forum marks the first in-person meeting between the two parties since 2016. Cuba is participating in an observer capacity.
