Deaths Reported in Boat Tragedy

(ABS Television/Radio) Three people are now known to have died from the boat tragedy off St Kitts early Tuesday morning. They are all believed to have been from countries in Africa.

The boat left from Antigua with 32 people aboard and capsized and sank in deep water about 12 nautical miles south of Conaree in St Kitts, or about 40 miles from Antigua.

The St Kitts and Nevis Defence Force has confirmed the three bodies were pulled from the water within the last hour as the search intensifies.

Sixteen people were initially taken from the water, one of whom was feared dead, while the other 15 were taken to St Kitts. Two of the 16 were Antiguans and Barbudans while the others were from African countries.

The authorities had earlier reported the first death from among that group of 16, but have now indicated there is some uncertainty about the status of that individual.

ABS News will continue to provide regular updates.
