Teachers in CARICOM Skilled Workers Exchange Programme share experiences

(Ministry of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs, Trinidad and Tobago Press Release) On Friday, 17 March 2023, the Head and members of the CSME and Diaspora Affairs Unit, Ministry of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs, and other stakeholders were invited to a Meet and Greet hosted by Dr. the Honourable Nyan Gadsby-Dolly, Minister of Education on the Secondary School Teacher Attachment Programme, as part of the CARICOM Skilled Workers Exchange Programme.

Other key stakeholders present included visiting teachers from Jamaica and St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Dr. Laurette Bristol, Programme Manager from the CARICOM Secretariat and Dr. Peter Smith, Chief Education Officer at the Ministry of Education.

The Secondary School Teacher Attachment Programme is a collaboration between the CARICOM Secretariat, regional Ministries of Education and National CSME Focal Points, which aims to improve regional integration efforts and promote the benefits of the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME) to secondary school students.

During the Meet and Greet, the visiting teachers shared their teaching experiences while working in the participating schools of Barrackpore West Secondary, Holy Faith Convent Couva and Queen’s Royal College (QRC). During the remarks regarding their experience in Trinidad and Tobago, the Teachers identified policies, initiatives and best practices within their host schools which they wish to adopt in their home country.

In her remarks, Dr. Bristol reflected on the field trips earlier in the week to the said schools, where the teachers demonstrated their ability to use aspects of the CSME to insert regional integration into their tutorials, in order to generate interest in the subject matter.  The visiting delegation sat in on the classes and provided feedback to the teachers, which she said, provided an opportunity for a rich exchange of ideas.

The event concluded with remarks from Dr. the Honourable Nyan Gadsby-Dolly, Minister of Education. The Minister highlighted the importance of the programme and the continued need for collaboration among Caribbean nations, in order to achieve national and regional development goals.
