UWI, CARICOM to mark 50 years of CARICOM-Cuba relations

(CARICOM Secretariat, Georgetown, Guyana) – The Institute of International Relations (IIR) at the University of the West Indies (UWI), in association with the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat, has planned a virtual forum to mark 50 years of cooperation between CARICOM and Cuba.

A UWI-CARICOM Webinar will be held on Thursday, 1 December, from 5pm, and will feature several distinguished officials including, Assistant Secretary-General for the Directorate of Foreign and Community Relations, CARICOM Secretariat, Ambassador Donna Forde; and Interim Director of the IIR, Dr. Annita Montoute.

The virtual forum features a panel discussion involving the Ambassador of Barbados to CARICOM, His Excellency David Comissiong; former Acting Director and Lecturer, Institute of International Relations, the UWI, Dr. Mark Kirton; Senior Coordinator, Hemispheric and Bilateral Negotiations, CARICOM Secretariat, Ms. Michele Lowe; former Ambassador of Cuba to Jamaica, Mr. José Francisco Piedra Rencurrell; and Trade Research Fellow, Shridath Ramphal Centre for International Trade, Cave Hill Campus, Dr. Kai-Ann Skeete. The session will be chaired by Lecture of International Relations at UWI, Dr. Jacqueline Laguardia Martinez.

Over the years, CARICOM and Cuba have forged a deep and meaningful relationship based on solidarity and cooperation. Cuba’s contribution to the Community’s human resource development, its health sector, agriculture, sports, and culture has been of major significance to CARICOM Member States.
