‘We must act now to secure our future’ – CARICOM Secretary-General

As she headed to COP27, the United Nations Climate Conference in Egypt, CARICOM Secretary-General, Dr. Carla Barnett said that the Region is resolute in its position and singular in its demand for climate justice for the vulnerable.

In a video recording on Friday, the Secretary-General warned that “we must act now to secure our future”. Ambitious and credible actions in adaptation, finance and loss and damage are paramount, she said.

She referred to the intense weather events that six CARICOM Member States endured over the past two weeks that resulted in a preliminary estimate of “tens of millions” of dollars in damage.

“It has become a cycle we know all too well and one that we cannot long bear,” she said, and pointed out that the situation is “dire”.
