‘Climate change is real’ PM Pierre after heavy flooding wreaks havoc in north of St. Lucia

“I know that most people are in disbelief as to the magnitude and rapidity of the devastation. Climate change is real. We are working to provide basic relief to those who have lost everything during this disaster,” Saint Lucia Prime Minister, the Hon. Philip J. Pierre said Sunday.

The Prime Minister made a Facebook post following his visit to areas of the country which suffered devastating flooding Sunday as a result of heavy, persistent rainfall.

The Prime Minister cautioned residents living in flood-prone areas of the country to exercise “extreme caution”.

The “torrential rains, the related flooding, and land slippage have left families with major damage and loss of property. I know many people, particularly in the South experienced little to no rainfall and for that I am thankful,” the Prime Minister said in the Facebook post.

He said teams from the Ministry for Infrastructure have been dispatched to clear roads and waterways to allow persons who are stranded to get home.

“It is advised that people should stay off the roads to allow emergency vehicles and personnel to attend to affected areas and people. Emergency Shelters were assessed for their suitability to temporarily house affected people, however, these households have opted to either go back to their homes or stay with friends and family,” he added.
