Preparations for Heads of Government Meeting in Suriname move into high gear

CARICOM Secretary-General, Dr. Carla Barnett, was in Suriname during the week for discussions with President Chandrikapersad Santokhi on the upcoming Forty-Third Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of CARICOM.

The Conference will be held in Paramaribo 3-5 July 2022, with President Santokhi assuming the Chairmanship of the Community on 1 July.

President Santokhi is Lead Head of Government with responsibility for Community Development and Cultural Cooperation in the CARICOM Quasi Cabinet. He also holds responsibility for Industrial Policy, the latest addition to the list of portfolios in the CARICOM Quasi Cabinet. Dr. Barnett said discussions with President Santohki included the work to be done in that area.

She said the Conference will have follow-up discussions on the recent CARICOM Agri Investment Forum and Expo held in Georgetown, Guyana in May, as well as the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the Region.

The progress on the implementation of the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME) since the Conference last met in Belize in March for their Thirty-Third Intersessional Meeting, is on the packed agenda. The Heads of Government will also deliberate on climate change and climate financing.
