COTED ICT Chair salutes women ‘working tirelessly’ in science

Deputy Premier of Montserrat, Dr. Samuel Joseph, on Friday saluted women in science who “help to push the frontiers of our minds”.

Dr. Joseph, who is the Minister of Communications, Works, Energy and Labour of Montserrat was at the time delivering opening remarks as Chairman of a Special Meeting of the Council for Trade and Economic Development (COTED) focusing on ICT.

Reducing the gender gap in ICTS and respective careers was among the matters before Ministers at the Meeting.

“… February 11 – today – was established as the day to be celebrated to encourage women and girls in the field of science: International Day of Women & Girls in Science– so it is good that we have an opportunity to approve a plan which could draw more women and girls into the ICT and STEM sector(s),” the COTED Chair said.

He said that if CARICOM was going to profit from the Digital Economy – the Region had to work to ensure that as many women as possible were given opportunities to interface, use and learn from digital technologies.

“I take this opportunity, as Chair of COTED ICT, to salute all women across the world, in particular CARICOM women, who continue to work tirelessly in the intriguing Science sector and help to push the frontiers of our minds”, he said.

The Minister also paid homage to “the many men in CARICOM” who have chosen areas of study and careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).
