More must be done to bridge gender gap – CARICOM ASG tells Barbados WiMAC launch

CARICOM Assistant Secretary-General, Mr. Joseph Cox has acknowledged the training, mentorship and networking opportunities that have been emphasised in the march towards female empowerment in the Maritime Industry, but said much more needs to be done to bridge the gender gap in the sector.

Mr. Cox articulated this view as he addressed the launch of the Barbados Chapter of the Women in Maritime Association Caribbean (WiMAC) on 28 January 2022.

Bridging the gender gap, he said, required targetted financial incentives and support; automation and digital transformation of the sector; effective advocacy and the increased use of social intervention programmes that were geared towards the reduction of gender specific stereotype. He offered as well that there was need for enhanced public education aimed at highlighting the varying opportunities within the sector; and the strengthening and enforcement of laws, policies and regulations.
