Within Current Crisis ‘Solution Sets’, Energy Sits at the Centre – CARICOM DSG

CARICOM Deputy Secretary-General, Dr. Armstrong Alexis, has posited that energy is the inextricable link between regional sustainable development and climate change.

At the opening of the Seventh Caribbean Sustainable Energy Forum on 22 November, Dr. Alexis said energy was at the centre of the solution sets to the current crisis.

“The current crisis is clearly interlinked with many of our other vulnerability crises. We believe, that, within the “solution sets” that are available to us, energy sits at the centre. Energy is the inextricable link connecting the regional sustainable development agenda and climate change. There is increasing acceptance that the transition towards a low carbon energy pathway can support the integration of climate‑resilience and mitigation into national development but there is acceptance, too, that some critical gaps remain,” he told the audience at the hybrid event that was anchored in Bridgetown, Barbados, and livestreamed on social media.

The Forum is one of the events of CARICOM Energy Month that is currently being observed under the theme ‘From Dependence to Resilience: Fueling our Recovery with Sustainable Energy‘. CSEF is co‑organised by the Secretariat, Institutions and Member States of the Community. The Forum provides a platform for key national, regional and international stakeholders, from within the public and private sectors and civil society, to take stock of the present state and realign their future outlook of the pursuit of the defined sustainable energy goals and targets at regional and national levels within CARICOM.
