CARICOM Building at the UWI named in honour of late Barbados Prime Minister

(UWI Press Release) The CARICOM Building at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus, has been named in honour of the late former Prime Minister, Professor Owen Arthur.

Professor Arthur, who passed away on July 27 2020, was conferred the title of Professor of Practice in Economics of Development by the UWI following his departure from representative politics in 2018.

Addressing the renaming ceremony (on July 9, 2021), Prime Minister Mia Mottley hailed Professor Arthur’s excellence and his commitment to the task at hand.

Pro-Vice Chancellor and Principal of the UWI, Cave Hill Campus, Professor the Most Honourable Eudine Barriteau, recalled the late former leader’s passion for research and a love of regionalism, which were hallmarks of his professional and public life.

Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sir Hilary Beckles remembered Mr. Arthur as a great friend of The UWI.

Members of Mr. Arthur’s family were also present, including his daughter Leah, who said her father was looking forward to the renaming ceremony.
