CARICOM leaders commiserate with India

Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Heads of Government are in solidarity with India as the country grapples with an increase in coronavirus cases.

There are reports of oxygen shortages and the government of India has approved plans for more than 500 oxygen generation plants across the country to boost supplies.

On his Facebook page, Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, Dr. the Hon. Keith Rowley, Chair of CARICOM, shared a video of the situation in India and noted how easy it was for “this dangerous virus to overrun any situation”.

“Our thoughts are with the people of India who have been very kind to us. Let us not get tired of trying to fight off this virus. This is what pandemic conditions can be. Please be responsible. Nobody is exempted from this scourge,” Prime Minister Rowley said.

Also in a Facebook post, Prime Minister of Dominica, the Hon. Roosevelt Skerrit, Chair of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), called on everyone to “keep the people and government of India in our prayers as they continue to grapple with the Covid 19 pandemic.

“As Chairman of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) and Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of Dominica, I wish to affirm that we stand united with India in the hour of need. India as a country stood alongside our vulnerable nation at our time of need. Not only with the Commonwealth of Dominica but also with our neighbours right here in the Caribbean in the selfless donation of Astra Zeneca vaccines. The leader of the great country of India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, recognised the plight of his Commonwealth brothers and acted swiftly in making the vaccines available.With a huge population and a significant strain on its medical system, it is a country in its darkest hours. As we all know, this pandemic has swept through many western countries which have suffered similar loss of lives”, Prime Minister Skerrit said in the post.
