CRC discusses PM Browne’s call for Global Reparations tax
A call made by Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, the Hon. Gaston Browne for a one percent global tax for slavery reparations is on the agenda for a meeting of the CARICOM Reparations Commission which got underway on Friday. The meeting is being held at the the Jolly Beach Hotel in Antigua and Barbuda. Representatives from Reparations Commissions across the CARICOM Region stayed in Antigua for the meeting following a Symposium titled “Western Banking, Colonialism and Reparations” that was held on Thursday.
Director of the Center for Reparation Research, Professor Verene Shepherd, disclosed that the issue of finances was one of the many topics on the agenda as financial reparations was one component of the reparations claim and that part of the discussion would include the Prime Minister’s suggestion. She said that for a better understanding of the issued, public education regarding reparations was another matter that was going to be under consideration.
The Commissioners used the opportunity to meet after the symposium so that they could discuss the economic issues that were ventilated and the research findings in relation to the involvement of the banking sector in profiting from slavery and colonialism. Discussions and planning also ensued on upcoming events and activities for the reparations movement.
The Caribbean Reparations Commission is a regional body created to establish the moral, ethical and legal case for the payment of reparations by the governments of all the former colonial powers and the relevant institutions of those countries, to the nations and people of the Caribbean Community for the Crimes against Humanity of Native Genocide, the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade and a racialised system of chattel Slavery.
