Through the training provided at the Forum, officials enhanced their knowledge of the governance framework for foreign investment, the key protections in IIAs and how they are interpreted, the current design of investor-state arbitration and the experiences of CARICOM countries with investor-state dispute settlement (ISDS). The Forum also improved officials’ understanding of options for reform of IIAs and ISDS, and of reform initiatives that are being pursued worldwide at the national, regional and multilateral levels.

Based on a strategy session conducted, officials developed recommendations concerning review of the governance framework for investment, reform of their countries’ existing IIAs and reforms with respect to future negotiation of such treaties.

The event was jointly organized by the CARICOM Secretariat, the International Institute for Sustainable Development, the United Nations Conference and Trade and Development and the Commonwealth Secretariat.
