GAN summer camp exposes more youth to animation
Deputy Programme Manager, ICT4D at the CARICOM Secretariat, Ms. Jennifer Britton, commended GAN as she made remarks at the launch of the organization’s fourth annual summer camp at the University of Guyana in Georgetown on Friday 12 July.
One hundred youths, including children in underprivileged communities, will be trained in animation, virtual reality, game design and coding, the Guyana Chronicle reported.
Ms. Britton said that the camps were impressive, continued to deal with new concepts every year and that they provided an opportunity for young people – who easily connected with the digital tools available today – to learn about animation, which was a developing industry in the Caribbean.
Animation is all around us – from Peppa pig to Aladdin – and increasingly, more youth are being exposed to the possibilities of animation. Animation is also the basis for simulation software being used in major industries including: event planning, education, marketing, shipping, physics, robotics, healthcare, 3D printing, and supply-chain logistics, and provides many new avenues for youth entrepreneurship and employment.
She indicated that the work of GAN would allow the Secretariat to assess, in the context of the Single ICT Space, the responsiveness of young people to the industry which could influence its use as a pilot project in the rest of the Caribbean.
As the world commemorates World Youth Skills day today – July 15 – the CARICOM Secretariat joins with the rest of the world to salute and support all persons and entities, like GAN, who are teaching young children and youth on skills such as digital literacy and citizenship and equipping them for surviving and thriving in the 21st century.
