Women and Men in the Caribbean Community: Facts and Figures,1980-2001

This report, Women and Men in the Caribbean Community: Facts and Figures, 1980-2001, has been prepared as one of the main outputs of the United Nations Project, "Strengthening Capacity in the Compilation of Statistics and Indicators for Conference Follow-up in the CARICOM Region," jointly carried out by the United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD) and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat. The Project has been executed with the participation of the CARICOM Member States, which are Antigua and Barbuda, The Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti 1, Jamaica, Montserrat, St. Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago.

The report brings together statistics and indicators on key social and gender issues of particular concern to the CARICOM Region. It is the first report of its kind for the Region that seeks to highlight the emerging issues, through a systematic presentation of statistics, and the first in a series of biennial reports that will compile and present gender-sensitive statistics on key emerging social issues in the Region.

The purpose of the report is three-fold. First, it is to provide preliminary review and assessment of the availability of statistics with respect to issues that were the focus of recent major United Nations conferences, such as the International Conference on Population and Development (1994); the World Social Summit (1995); and the Fourth International Conference on Women (1995). Second, there is the need to illustrate the importance of statistics in understanding social dimensions with respect to the key issues, such as power and decision-making, violence against women and education; and towards the goal of equal opportunity for women and men. The third is to make better use of available statistics, to shed light on the comparative situations in CARICOM Member States and to help identify gaps in the data at the national level for countries that may not be collecting some of this information. Some countries may have the information but have not effectively disseminated them to regional institutions.

Essentially, it is hoped that this report, as well as future reports, will lead to an improvement in the quality and consistency of data collection and compilation at the national level and also address issues surrounding data comparability among Member States. Further, it is anticipated that it can assist in one of the major objectives of the UNSD/CARICOM Project: the promotion of the use of the data in policy formation and decision-making.
